Context

The basics of sexual and menstrual health are commonly taught to people for the first time in their early secondary school life. Between then and when they might become sexually active can be a long enough time for many people to forget important basics of the topic, if they had retained the information to begin with.

This campaign first looked for the gaps in people’s knowledge of menstrual and sexual health, then used those findings to guide the direction of the educational digital and print resources created following that.

My role

End-to end design research, graphic design, UX UI design, illustration

Research

Design resarch kit

Knowing that I wanted to delve into the topic of menstrual and sexual health, I took inspiration from the form of a menstrual pad to create the design research kits for this campaign.

Some folded up and opened up research kits and its encased pen used to collect participant responses.

Presenting the findings

Creating vulnerability in a shared acknoledgement of confusion

This A1 poster sheds light on one of the intriguing if not concerning findings of the Design Research Kit by stacking their hand drawn answers on top of each other – showing the lack of clarity in the question’s answer across participants.

Poster reads: "Ten people between the ages of 19 and 33, seven who menstruate, were asked to plot the labels below on a timeline of a menstrual cycle. Just one participant correctly identified the phases of a menstrual cycle. Four of the participants incorrectly believed that a person could not get pregnant if they had penetrative vaginal sex during their period."

The challenge

How might be close the sexual and reproductive health knowledge gap in young adults?
